A Coastal Call To Arms – The Back and Fill Festival

Heritage and the arts come together in this unique vision for fighting back against the social and economic impact of coronavirus in our seaside towns. Theirs is a fragile economy, wherever they are in the world, often dependent upon the inward rush of seasonal tourism attracted by sun, sea and sand, which in 2020 has reduced to a trickle.

In Margate, Ramsgate and 11 other coastal resorts across the UK, small groups of creative entrepreneurs are putting on a show of defiance, and extending a warm arts-led invitation to all to re-connect with their communities.

From Margate to St. Ives, Swansea to Stromness, the ecology of independent shops, small businesses and creative industries is being hit hard. But ideas of health and wellbeing, being outdoors, playfulness and innovation, and fresh food – the same things that drew the Georgians to the seaside 300 years ago – are exactly what we’ll need to recover from the current crisis.

To celebrate the exciting work of these valiant creative pioneers, The Earth Museum has worked in partnership with the Back and Fill team to create 3 scratch maps for you to dive in and explore, virtually online or walking the streets…
