The fog seems to be following us as we move inland, so we have taken refuge in another shop. We have still found no people, although there are signs of life all around us. The shops seem to be stocked, and lit, which is good – we are out of fresh provisions. We have tinned food, but no can opener. I thought Edie had packed it, but ‘No, Penny – the kitchenalia was your responsibility’, she insists. Outside, we have variously heard the sounds of bicycles, horses and carts, and motor vehicles – although when we try to find them, the streets are empty. Most persistent is a sound very familiar from trips from our Kent home to the museums and reading rooms of London – the distinctive wooden rattle and clatter of the carriages of trains on the London Underground!
