Edie smokes a pipe. It is an awful habit for a lady. I sometimes think that she wishes she had been born a man. I know father would have liked a son (‘two daughters, Mr Powell-Powell?’) and he has encouraged Edie in her ways, allowing her to dress as a boy when she was little, and to play boy’s games. After losing her Erinmore Mixture some days ago, today she found a small bale of tobacco in the basement of this shop, labelled ‘From the free farm of Mr Peter Beacock’. I wonder how it got here? It must have been farmed, and harvested, and traded, and shipped, and traded again. Smoking is a dreadful habit, and I am sure that it is bad for one’s health, but Edie is considerably more pleasant to be around now!
