Hidden Stories: Mary Gaines Peabody and the Dinosaur Hunters

The Smithsonian has recently launched its wonderful 3D Digitization initiative, creating open access 3D resources for a selection of its vast collections. I couldn’t resist having a rummage and choosing a few objects to inspire stories on The Earth Museum!

Over the next few weeks, we’ll take a look at some of the hidden stories behind these objects. We start with the story of Mary Gaines Peabody (Marsh), who was the mother of a famous C19th American dinosaur hunter, Othniel Charles Marsh, and sister of the American philanthropist, George Peabody. A story inspired by the 3D digital model of the Triceratops horridus Marsh, 1889.
