Ships of faraway empires sailing across the Pacific Ocean in the C18th and C19th found themselves arriving at the shores of the volcanic Rapa Nui Easter Island. Rapanui people found themselves entangled in the worlds of whalers, explorers, missionaries, slave traders, colonists and nationalist flag-bearers, as these characters ‘discovered’, settled and exploited the Island and its indigenous community.

El pueblo rapanui se encontró enredado en el mundo de los balleneros, exploradores, misioneros, traficantes de esclavos, colonos y abanderados nacionalistas, mientras estos personajes “descubrían”, se asentaban y explotaban la isla y su comunidad indígena.
Al principio Rapa Nui fue un peldaño en la inmensidad del Pacífico donde se podía encontrar agua dulce, leña, comida y diferencia cultural. Finalmente, la isla se convirtió en un destino económico útil en la ruta a través del océano para ser despojada de sus bienes naturales y culturales, y de su gente; y formado a la imagen de los demás.
At first Rapa Nui was a stepping-stone in the vastness of the Pacific where fresh water, firewood, food and cultural difference could be found. Eventually the Island became a usefully economic destination on route across the ocean to be stripped of its natural and cultural assets, and its people; and shaped in the image of others.
Cristian Moreno Pakarati has created a list of those ships encountered by the Rapanui based on research of published documentary sources. We have mapped the ports of origin for a selection of these international expeditions, and traced a few of their routes on our Expeditions map.

These ships brought materials, people, flora, fauna, disease and violence to the Island, and were the vehicles of removal which took Rapanui people, identity and self-determination away. The taking of Rapanui cultural heritage weaves as a recurring thread throughout all these relationships, wrapped in cloaks of science and disempowerment.
Yet the Rapanui people have skilfully carried their great knowledge and cultural traditions through into the present, despite these deep injustices. They stand tall like their ancestors as the descendants of great Pacific navigators; and as powerful indigenous global ambassadors for today’s world.
Sin embargo, el pueblo rapanui ha llevado hábilmente su gran conocimiento y tradiciones culturales hasta el presente, a pesar de estas profundas injusticias. Se yerguen como sus ancestros como descendientes de grandes navegantes del Pacífico; y como poderosos embajadores globales indígenas para el mundo de hoy.
Las expediciones que ahora desembarcan en sus costas son grandes ‘palacios’ de cruceros blancos que atraen a turistas internacionales para conocer el pasado de Rapa Nui. A través del trabajo de la Comunidad Indígena Polinesia Ma’u Henua, la Sociedad de Pioneros Rapanui y muchos otros, el Parque Nacional Rapa Nui se mantiene como tierra ancestral y las historias de la Isla transmitidas se transmiten con verdad e integridad.
The expeditions that now land on Rapanui shores are large white cruising ‘palaces’ that bring international tourists to learn about Rapa Nui’s past. Through the work of Ma’u Henua Polynesian Indigenous Community, the Rapanui Pioneers Society and many others, the Rapa Nui National Park is maintained as ancestral lands and the Island’s stories passed down are conveyed with truth and integrity.
