The C18th and C19th represent a period of significant change for Britain and the Isle of Wight. Many of the foundations for modern society we have today were shaped during these centuries. Within 200 years, the Isle of Wight transformed from a mainly agricultural community into a significant cog in Britain’s trading empire; and became a place of leisure and tourism for wealthy classes making money from this sometime dark imperial machine.
