Isle of Wight, Science Innovation Island

Evidence from prehistory and history demonstrates that, even from the earliest times, the Island has been a place of great innovation. The sea has never been far from these stories of invention, unsurprising given its geography! The Solent provided a great testing playground for shipbuilders and boat designers interested in speed on the water. Shipwrecks around the Island galvanised ideas about safety at sea and diving underwater for salvage. The tranquillity of the Island has attracted great thinkers and scientists interested in photography, earthquake science and much more.
